On December 15, 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $350 million of Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding to 14 states to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. The Methane Emissions Reduction Program will help states support industry efforts to cut methane emissions from wells on nonfederal lands and support environmental restoration of well sites through technical and financial assistance. 30 percent of methane emissions come from the oil and gas sector and through the program, states will help owners and operators identify and eliminate emissions from oil and gas wells with disproportionately high emissions. The program will also support DOE and EPA efforts to implement the U.S. Methane Emissions Reduction Action Plan. For more information on the program and a list of awarded state agencies, click here.
