On July 23, 2022 New York Governor Hochul announced interim recommendations to address extreme heat. At the direction of the Governor, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation collaborated to organize the Extreme Heat Action Plan Working Group of 20 agencies. The working group identified several recommended actions the state can take to prepare for and respond to extreme heat, such as expanding the number of available cooling centers, expanding access to energy efficiency improvements for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers through the Home Energy Assistance Program, writing an equity-focused Extreme Heat Adaptation Plan, and adding extreme heat to the state emergency management plan.
