Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the availability of $100 million in grants through the Clean Green Schools Initiative, part of the $4.2 billion Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. The initiative, administered by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), aims to advance construction projects for greenhouse gas reduction and environmental sustainability in public school buildings, aligning with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act's emission reduction goals. NYSERDA will oversee the competitive application process, open to all eligible public school districts, if they are designated as high-needs by the New York State Education Department or located in a disadvantaged community as defined by the New York State Climate Justice Working Group, focusing on projects that enhance air quality, resilience, and electrification. The initiative also addresses the challenges posed by climate change and outdated school infrastructure, with additional funding for cooling capacity. Proposals are due by June 6, 2024. The funding is part of the Environmental Bond Act's $400 million allocation for green building projects and expands the Clean Green Schools Initiative initially introduced by Governor Hochul in April 2022. The announcement follows extensive public engagement processes and underscores NYSERDA's commitment to creating healthier, more sustainable learning environments for students and educators.
